École Quadra Elementary School

This seismic upgrade included a complete code upgrade for the entire building and annex which entailed new electrical, mechanical and sprinkler systems throughout. New interior finishes were provided to accommodate the seismic upgrades and renovations. The 1914 block single pane windows were replaced with new thermal windows to improve energy efficiency.

A portion of the 1962 block was demolished and replaced with a new building to accommodate a new main entry, new administration offices, and support space. A new entrance canopy provides a welcoming focal point for the new main entry to the School. Extensive structural work included interior and exterior concrete shear walls at the 1962 & 1968 blocks along with new interior concrete moment frames and steel ring beams at all three levels of the 1914 block. The original heritage exterior of the original 1914 school was preserved during the seismic upgrade.

The school population was relocated to a temporary swing space to accommodate this seismic upgrade and accelerate the construction to one year. Construction management allowed for a fast track construction sequence, including 5 separate (phased) building permit applications. A key success for the project was an ambitious timeline while maintaining the least amount of disruption to the on-going operations of the facility.
